Back to School @
eLibrary Curriculum Edition

Welcome back! A few days ago we released the latest updates to your subscription, just in time for back to school—powered by ProQuest.

We've updated the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for citations in all versions of eLibrary that offer computer generated (and editable) citations.

Keep in mind that eLibrary CE, unlike other subscription databases, offers a unique and helpful edit function that allows students to easily add missing text fields or fix errors.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Curriculum (I.B.) standards have been added to our exclusive standards search. If you support an IB program at your school, you can now more easily use your subscription to find classroom-ready content that aligns to diploma standards. (Standards search in action).

What's coming? Soon we'll release the Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011 and AFP Still Graphic images.

World Almanac and Book of Facts 2010 Edition and Great Events of the 20th Century videos will also be loaded. Finally, the Chronology of American Literature and Encyclopedia of World History are also now accessible.

Celebrate Constitution Day

September 17 is the annual celebration of Constitution Day. Schools are expected to create activities about understanding and appreciating our U.S. Constitution.

During the last two years, there has been much debate between Republicans and Democrats about our Constitution on the Internet and TV. These debates have provided the public with an "education" that they may never have received or remembered from their days in school. Unfortunately, some of the information is either exaggerated or inaccurate and this has caused polarization among independents, conservatives, and progressive constituencies.

ProQuest, using your powerful eLibrary CE subscription as a content source, has created a BookCart learning activity to help your students learn more about the Constitution—"The Constitution and Bill of Rights."

Retrieve this timely student activity for CE (along with lessons employing History Study Center and ProQuest Learning: Literature, two additional content sets available inside your subscription).

This is one of 22 CourseCart learning activities that librarians and teachers can copy to their local collections. CourseCarts are collections of BookCart learning activities that address the major topics and issues of popular courses and textbooks—in this instance, U.S. Government & Civics.

This learning activity and all the other CourseCart learning activities in the collection can be copied by first opening eLibrary CE Teacher Edition, then clicking this CourseCart (XLS) link.

  Librarian & Teacher Tip
Using eLibrary CE in Bilingual Education

Over the summer, Susan M. from Smart Horizons Career Online High School in Florida wrote to ask: "When I was reviewing [eLibrary] I thought there was a bilingual component? Is that correct? If so how can I locate it?"

Great question, Susan! Here's a short list of the bilingual support tools and content you'll find in all of our eLibrary titles:
  • Translation tool: Makes it easy to translate eLibrary text from English to 10 languages, including Spanish, French, German, etc. Do a search, open a document from the results list, and select the appropriate language from the translation tool in the upper right-hand corner.

  • Spanish Encyclopedia and Dictionary can be found in the Reference Desk.

  • Spanish language periodicals available via Publications Search include: Hispanic Review, Symposium, Latin American Research Review, Americas, Texas Monthly, Santa Fe New Mexican, Inter Press Service Spanish News Wire, The Press Enterprise, People en Espanol and more.
Keep in mind that eLibrary's BookCart tool allows librarians and teachers to select the most appropriate content, include essential questions for critical thinking, and student directions for custom inquiry-based learning. This could include websites in other languages plus eLibrary Spanish-language articles.

Don't miss the video links on the right side of this month's newsletter to see eLibrary and our BookCart tool in action, both in two minutes or less.

The Reader's Companion to the American Presidency
eLibrary CE eBook Fall Feature

Just in time for September's Constitution Day festivities, head into eLibrary and conduct a Publications Search, then enter "Companion to the American Presidency" in the Search box without the quotes.

Select Books from the pull-down menu, and finally click Search to find this new eBook in your subscription. It includes 41 essays by some of the top U.S. historians about the personalities, policies, and tragic flaws of our nation's chief executives.

Library Journal called it "the best place to find an authoritative overview of each president." Each presidential profile includes information not often included in similar reference works, such as demographic information, a summary of federal finances during the president's term, data about economic production during the era, and a timeline of events.

As with most eLibrary eBooks, there are both internal links to major sub-sections of each presidential essay, a table of contents and previous/next navigation. The documents also appear within search results.

Research projects on presidential administrations, biographies of presidents and first ladies, plus investigations into historical eras are common assignments. This new eBook supports these assignments, aligns to national social studies standards, and provides entertaining and informative reading for patrons of any age.

  Support Tools & More @ All-new proquestk12.com
Summer is one of our busiest seasons here at ProQuest headquarters. After talking with teachers and librarians at recent national conferences, we set to work making our central proquestk12.com support website easier to use and revised a number of items, including:

Handy Home Page: You said our home page was too busy. We agreed! The new entry page is cleaner, clearer, and offers an interactive calendar for our free web training sessions and live @ProQuest Twitter feed. Give it a try, and let the new large images scroll to see what's new.

Standards-Linked Lessons Plans: Revised for 2010! Developed by experienced educators with subject-matter expertise, these activities have been aligned to national standards and developed for four grade levels and four subject areas. Activities now address all of our major databases, making this a must-download set of free lesson plans.

2009-2010 Content Additions

One of the most useful additions to the all-new eLibrary are ProQuest Essentials, or "smart" content pages. These special pages highlight content from within 80 million documents, 5 million images, and 50,000 websites.

ProQuest Essentials (video) are mapped to specific queries and appear as the first search result. They're created and maintained by our editors based on the most popular queries and most studied subjects in schools. This means what users need first, they see first—so they spend less time searching and more time learning.

More than 1,600 new ProQuest Essentials were added through the end of last school year, including:

To find this time-saving content, click Publications Search, select the letter P, and scroll down to ProQuest Essentials to mine the collection alphabetically.

Many additional content loads (new and updated sources) were made during the past school year as well. Click here for a sampler of new additions through Summer 2010 (PDF).
