Celebrate Constitution Day

On September 17, 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. Only one item of business occupied the agenda that day--to sign the Constitution of the United States of America. In just four hand-written pages, the Constitution gives us no less than the owners' manual to the greatest form of government the world has ever known. Tap into our Constitution Day resources at eLibrary.

Munich Agreement

SIRS Decades
The Munich Agreement: Avoiding War?

Eighty years ago, in a desperate attempt to avoid war, the leaders of Great Britain and France met with Hitler in Munich in September of 1938. During the meeting, they acceded to Hitler's demands to cede the Sudetenland to Germany, as well as to most of his additional demands. Students can learn more about the debates between the isolationists and interventionists of this era that preceded the U.S. entry into World War II. These debates are similar to those preceding the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Presidential Election 2008: Health Care Reform

While other nations have some form of national health care system in place, the United States is the only industrialized nation with a voluntary employer-based plan. The United States also outspends all other countries on health care per capita and as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP). Yet based on measures such as life expectancy at birth, the American people receive a lower level of care than do the citizens of many countries that spend less.

U.S. Healthcare | At a Crossroads

SIRS Leading Issues provides an excellent strategy and lesson plan for students to learn more about the fundamentals of this major issue of the 2008 election, why it's so important to so many people, and which candidate's solution is more likely to be successful.

Understanding & Appreciating our Constitution

Learning about the Constitution and our government is something that students need to do continually, not just on September 17--Constitution Day. That's why a U.S. Government & Civics course is required in high schools in every state. The good news for teachers is that ProQuest has created a collection of 21 CourseCarts that directly correlate to U.S. Government and Civics (or similar) textbooks and courses of study.

World Conflicts Today
Women's Rights @ Afghanistan

The study unit on Afghanistan in World Conflicts Today includes reference to the events of September 11, 2001. Included is this quote: "brought horror of a magnitude that, a day earlier, few Americans could have imagined."

Women's Rights @ Afghanistan

Late in 2001, after a U.S.-led coalition toppled the Taliban, women saw a return to the kinds of rights they had not enjoyed since the Soviet occupation. Using our provided pair of images of Kabuli women--the first, just weeks after the Taliban captured Kabul in 1996, and the second, just days after the Taliban fled Kabul in 2001--design a poster that makes a statement about women's rights.

Historical Newspapers
The Supreme Court

There are many recent examples of the Supreme Court rulings that involve the interpretation of the Bill of Rights: the rejection of the Washington, D.C. law that bans personal ownership and possession of guns; the looming possibility of the overturning of Roe v. Wade abortion rights; and supporting the FISA Act that provides for warrantless searches of personal electronic information under the Patriot Act.

The Supreme Court

Assign student to research one of the Supreme Court decisions of the past to understand how the political atmosphere of the era often influences the judgment of the Justices.
