  Student Activities: Georgia Standards
Why is it important for students to renew their understanding of the Constitution? Recently, many issues have been debated that are directly affected by the Bill of Rights of the Constitution, including gun control (Virginia Tech shootings), the right to privacy (Patriot Act), and the fourth amendment (partial birth abortion). Tap into these Leading Issues inside SIRS Researcher (activity) on Constitution Day (9/17).

There are many news events related to issues that have their basis in Constitutional rights that are presented each day on TV and covered in newspapers and magazines. Students in schools who use SIRS Discoverer (activity) are most likely aware of many of these events but probably not aware of their connection to the Bill of Rights of the Constitution.

The U.S. Constitution provides a flexible system of government whose challenge is to provide a balance between the rights of individuals and the rights of the government. Learn more inside SIRS Interactive Citizenship (activity).

SIRS Resource Highlight: National High School Debate Topic
Did you know that there are 200 million people suffering from malnourishment in Sub-Saharan Africa? This year, the National High School debate topic recognizes the significance of exploring and discussing this topic, and allows students to contemplate the United States’ and other countries’ responsibility in assisting this impoverished population. Let SIRS help learners delve into the magnitude of this health crisis, consider possible solutions, profile assistance programs, and more.

SIRS Challenge Quests & Spotlights
Banning books in schools is a controversial topic. Some school officials and educators challenge or remove books that they feel are offensive or inappropriate. Others believe that schools should teach students about sensitive topics. Get the facts in our SIRS Challenge Quests.

American citizenship carries with it certain privileges and responsibilities. National Civics Awareness Month promotes the education and awareness of these rights, duties and obligations. Explore this theme in our SIRS Spotlights.

Georgia SIRS Stories
"For the last several years, our senior English research papers have been issues based. One of our best sources of information comes from SIRS Researcher."

"On their first fact-finding day in the media center, we take our students to the PRO vs. CON Leading Issues link. This is a great topic selection tool as well."

"I show them the tabs Overview, Pro/Con, and MyAnalysis to help them think through their own feelings about a particular issue as they begin to formulate a thesis statement. This is an invaluable tool."

"I love the PDF maps in SIRS Discoverer! They are easy to print and fill the entire page. The historical maps are also great. I tell everyone who will listen to use your maps!"
