Concerns over the upcoming Beijing Olympics include the potential for boycotts from pro-Tibetan organizations such as Students for a Free Tibet, as well as from organizations such as Amnesty International that are upset with China's involvement in the crisis in Darfur.
SIRS Leading Issues provides a topic on Human Rights. It gives students an opportunity to understand this issue in the context of the talk of possible protests directed at the Chinese by the U.S. and other countries at the games. Playing sports helps elementary students form the foundation of attitudes, habits, and skills that will keep them active and fit for a lifetime. Many schools have expanded their elementary PE programs to include a greater emphasis on lifetime individual sports such as golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, and bicycling. Encourage students to research a sport of their choice in May.

Memorial Day: Remembering, Grieving
