SIRS Discoverer Activity | Preserving Our Environment
April provides the explosion of growth in trees and plants that marks the end of the winter doldrums. A series of celebrations of environmental preservation and beautification efforts occur in April—Earth Day is April 22, Arbor Day is April 30, and all of April is National Garden Month.

This month's essential questions for students: Why is this environmental topic most important to you? What are at least two problems that need attention for this topic? (Activity Archives)

eLibrary Elementary | Keep America Beautiful
Each of April's environmental observances and campaigns helps to organize millions of volunteers who are dedicated to the war on litter, energy conservation, and community beautification through nature. Many of the volunteers have been and will be students. This is a great opportunity for teachers to provide students with both an academic and practical lessons in environmental science. (Activity Archives)

This virtual activity for April includes several examples of essential questions for critical thinking that you can assign to your students. You can even create more of these or substitute others that challenge your students. Tap our additional 800+ free lesson models here.

SIRS Spotlights + Challenge Quests
National Poetry Month, by honoring all aspects of poetic activity, aspires to generate interest in and excitement about poetry and all of its traditions and forms.

SIRS Knowledge Source commemorates notable poets from all corners of the world with a wealth of articles and Web sites in this month's Spotlight of the Month.

In 2008, California voters passed Proposition 2, which bans farmers from confining calves, pregnant pigs, and egg-laying hens in tiny cages.

SIRS asks: By what year must California farmers comply with Proposition 2?
