Celebrate Constitution Day

Click here to read more about SIRS Issues Researcher and the current review appearing in Library Media Connection Magazine from LinWorth September 17 is the annual celebration of Constitution Day. Schools are expected to create activities about understanding and appreciating our Constitution.

During the last two years, there has been much debate between Republicans and Democrats about our Constitution on the Internet and TV. These debates have provided the public with an "education" that they may never have received or remembered from their days in school. Unfortunately, too much of the information is either exaggerated or inaccurate and this has caused polarization among independents, conservatives, and progressive constituencies.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled in the "Citizens United" decision that corporations were "persons" with first amendment rights to free speech. This decision allows unlimited political contributions by corporations to candidates for office, effectively repealing a series of laws and Supreme Court precedent rulings that supported the existing campaign finance reform laws.

Critics point out that this gives corporations and big business a huge financial advantage to select and then support the campaigns of candidates who will pass laws that are favorable to their demands—effectively limiting the election of populist candidates.

Recently, Republicans and some moderate Democrats have proposed the repeal of the 14th amendment that presently states that any child born on American soil is automatically granted U.S. citizenship. In addition, many of these supporters want to make this repeal retroactive and then deport all the children who received the "anchor baby" citizenship back to their native countries. The purpose of such an action is purported to be part of illegal immigration reform.
