SIRS Discoverer Teachable Moment: Summer 2010

ProQuest Lesson Plan Bookmark Tool

Reading is Fundamental

May is Get Caught Reading Month. Developed by the Association of American Publishers, Get Caught Reading is an industry-wide initiative to promote and celebrate reading.

Highlighting literacy, this initiative provides the retailer and wholesaler with the opportunity to serve their customers and reinforce strong ties within their community.

Retailers and wholesalers are encouraged to work together to develop the most effective programs to capture their interest in books.

From special displays to celebrity posters, each retailer can tailor the program to generate optimal community involvement, local press and incremental sales. For example, the program could be turned into a "periodical" drive (like a food or clothing drive) where customers buy and contribute periodicals to be donated to a local grassroots literacy program.

Ideas for tailoring your initiative are attached. Wholesalers will contact publishers for support in sponsoring the posters and displays.
Learning Activity
Motivating the reading of books or other short articles that engage students is the best way to increase literacy and build a life-long love of reading. Many schools may not have enough reading materials in the library or classroom to support this essential and ongoing emphasis on reading and literacy. Discoverer provides a collection of fiction at appropriate reading levels in a variety of genres and subject areas that supplements school library and classroom print collections.

Assign students to get "caught reading" at least three stories or poems from the Discoverer collection during May. Students should write a brief critique of at least fifty words about each of them.

The critique should include the theme of the story, a plot outline, a moral if applicable, and why they enjoyed or didn't enjoy the selection. Teachers or students can print the stories or poems after students select them. The printed copies can be integrated into the classroom "library" for use by other students in future reading activities.
