SIRS Knowledge Source The list of women who have occupied significant roles in American history is varied and great: Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Margaret Sanger are just a few such women.

Women of the 21st century continue this tradition of excellence and are widely recognized for their myriad social, political, cultural, and artistic achievements. But historically, the subject of women's history was missing from classrooms and absent from the cultural dialogue.

In an effort to increase awareness about women's societal contributions, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 1987 designating the month of March as Women's History Month. SIRS Knowledge Source pays tribute to women's history with a wealth of articles and Web sites:

March is Women's History Month, an annual celebration of women and their accomplishments. Spurred by the women's-rights movement of the 1960s, the observance was first held in March 1978 as Women's History Week. Nine years later, Congress expanded the observance to one month and declared March as Women's History Month.
