SIRS Knowledge Source Spotlighting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada

The history of the modern Olympic Games can be traced back to 1894, when the International Olympic Committee was founded in Switzerland. Two years later, the first Summer Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece.

In 1924, France hosted the first Winter Olympics, then called "The International Winter Sports Week." Sixteen nations sent athletes to compete.

In 2010, approximately 90 nations will compete in the XXI Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The opening ceremonies take place on February 10, followed by more than two weeks of the world's top athletes competing for medals in such events as Alpine skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, ski jumping and snowboarding.
