St. Lawrence Seaway Opens

The all-new SIRS Issues Researcher The all-new eLibrary The all-new SIRS Issues Researcher This year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. In a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II, the St. Lawrence Seaway is officially opened, creating a navigational channel from the Atlantic Ocean to all the Great Lakes.

The seaway, made up of a system of canals, locks, and dredged waterways, extends a distance of nearly 2,500 miles, from the Atlantic Ocean through the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Duluth, Minnesota, on Lake Superior.

Work on the massive project was initiated by a joint U.S.-Canadian commission in 1954, and five years later, in April 1959, the icebreaker D'Iberville began the first transit of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Since its official opening, more than two billion tons of cargo, with an estimated worth of more than $300 billion, have moved along its canals and channels.
BookCart Learning Activity
ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity to help your students learn more about the "St. Lawrence Seaway." This and all ProQuest Model BookCarts are custom and complete one-stop inquiry-based learning activities for your students.

Traditional "research time" often includes too much repetitive and non-productive searching and then evaluating of the relevancy of search results. Does this additional time really contribute to student achievement? BookCarts reduce the valuable classroom time lost in searching and evaluating, and then reinvest the time on the essentials of critical thinking, problem solving, and presentation of conclusions. BookCarts are easily updated for topics/issues that may be repeatedly assigned each school year.

Each Cart provides students with (a) essential questions that help them develop 21st Century critical thinking skills http://fno.org/feb07/topic.html; (b) directions that guide them in knowing what to do; (c) connections to relevant print resource call numbers; (d) an optional quiz; (e) a 21st Century information literacy standard; and (f) ProQuest models they can use for written reports and presentations. You won't find this unique combination of inquiry-based learning activity support in one place in any other K-12 resource.
