Native American Heritage Month
September is Native American Heritage Month. With a long history, rich culture, and more than 300 spoken languages, the wisdom of Native American tribes has been passed down through the centuries.
Here are some classic examples of Native American proverbs:
- They are not dead who live in the hearts they leave behind.—Tuscarora
- Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand.—Tribe Unknown
- When we show our respect for other living things, they respond with respect for us.—Arapaho
- If we wonder often, the gift of knowledge will come.—Arapaho
- Most of us do not look as handsome to others as we do to ourselves.—Assiniboine
- When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.—Cherokee

BookCart Learning Activity
ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity appropriate for elementary or middle school students—"'Native American History and Culture—ES/MS.''

BookCarts can include resources that directly address the reading and interest needs of your students regardless of whether they are challenged, mainstream, or advanced readers. Since BookCarts include all the student directions, essential questions, and learning resources students need, in one place, there is little chance of confusion and wasted time completing the assignment.
Pathfinder for Copying
- Open eLibrary Elementary Teacher Edition by clicking here.
- Click BookCart Admin link at the top right.
- Click the ProQuest Carts tab.
- Type "Native American History and Culture—ES/MS" in the Search box.
- Click the Copy icon in the Actions column to the right of the title.
- Click Return to My Local Carts tab to end the copying process.
This Cart should be edited in My Local Carts to adapt them for your students:
- Click the BookCart Title—it has "Copy of" as its prefix.
- Delete "Copy of" in the Title
- Type your name in the Author boxes
- Type your email address in the email box
- Optional: Edit the essential questions and any other text in the Directions box
- Scroll down and click Save button at bottom > Return to My Local Carts
Traditional Search Learning Activity
Type "American Indian History" in the Search box. Assign students to write a report of at least 100 words or an oral (PowerPoint) report of at least two minutes. Students should cite at least two resources and address these essential questions for critical thinking:
- Who were three of the most famous Native American chiefs, which tribes did they lead, and what are the reasons that they were famous?
- What are reservations and why were they created?
- What affect did living in reservations have on Native American quality of life?
