National Inventor's Month
August was National Inventor's Month. The goal of this back to school observance is to celebrate the achievements of the creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit of thousands of inventors who have contributed to a better life for all mankind.
These inventors have helped to shape the world into what it is today, and choosing the best ones is no easy task. Computers, microwaves, and antibiotics are routinely listed among the best inventions of all time.
While their importance is indisputable, the everyday inventions that make our lives easier often get overlooked. Think about simple inventions such as zippers, Velcro, pencils, and Kleenex that benefit us every day.
Then think about the new and exotic inventions being developed today such as robots, electric cars, 3-D televisions, and synthetic organs. The goal of all these inventions is to solve human problems and by doing so, increase the income of the inventor.
Learning Activity
Assign students to research three famous inventors, past or present, and summarize their personal backgrounds and their most famous inventions that have impact on the world today.
Students should create reports of at least 100 words or a presentation of at least two minutes and six slides that cites at least four resources.
Students should include a picture of the inventor and a picture of the famous invention.
Students should address the following essential questions for critical thinking (teachers can add to or substitute others):
- Why did you select these inventors?
- How do their inventions benefit you today?
- What would you like to see invented next and why?
