SIRS Knowledge Source®

SIRS Knowledge Source Celebrating the societal, political, and cultural influences of women throughout history.

The list of women who have occupied significant roles in American history is varied and great: Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Margaret Sanger, Gloria Steinem, and Katherine Graham are just a few such women.

Women of the 21st century continue this tradition of excellence and are widely recognized for their numerous social, political, cultural and artistic achievements. Historically, however, the subject of women's history was missing from classrooms and largely absent from the cultural dialogue. In an effort to increase awareness about women's societal contributions, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 1987 designating this month as Women's History Month.

SIRS Knowledge Source pays tribute to women's history with a wealth of articles and Web sites profiling the women's movement, women's suffrage, women in the political landscape, and notable women and their accomplishments.

SIRS Discoverer®

March is Women's History Month, an annual celebration of women, their history, and their accomplishments. Spurred by the women's rights movement of the 1960s, the observance was first held in March 1978 as Women's History Week. Nine years later, Congress expanded the observance to one month, and declared March as Women's History Month.

Women's contributions to American history are immeasurable. Despite the obstacles encountered in societies once hostile to equal rights, they have overcome hardships and adversities to make lasting contributions to the arts, sciences, sports, politics, technology, leadership, and social reform. Whatever their achievements, women are widely recognized as playing a vital role in society. SIRS Discoverer pays tribute to Women's History Month by honoring women and their contributions to American and world history.
