SIRS Discoverer The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is often called the "Last Great Race on Earth." A musher and a team of 12 to 16 dogs race across more than 1150 miles of wild Alaskan terrain. The ceremonial race of the 2009 Iditarod occurs on March 7 in Anchorage. The following day, the competitive race begins. Ten to 17 days later, a winner will cross the finish line in Nome, Alaska.
