The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is often called the "Last Great Race on Earth." A musher and a team of 12 to 16 dogs race across more than 1150 miles of wild Alaskan terrain. The ceremonial race of the 2009 Iditarod occurs on March 7 in Anchorage. The following day, the competitive race begins. Ten to 17 days later, a winner will cross the finish line in Nome, Alaska.
Long before the historic Iditarod Trail was a competition, it was a mail and supply route, connecting the Alaskan coast to mining camps. In what year was the Iditarod Trail declared a National Historic Trail by Congress?

Girls in public schools across the United States felt the impact of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX imposed equality laws onto public schools and banned sex discrimination, two features that helped expand athletic programs for females, such as women's soccer. Almost 30 years following the Title IX's inception, the first professional women's soccer league, the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), was established; two years later, it folded.
