Democrats vs. Republicans: Solutions

The challenges to the 44th President of the U.S., Barack Obama, are more formidable and unlike those of many other Presidents of the 20th century except Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The past Presidential campaign has filled the media with the arguments of both parties and their candidates as they proposed contrasting solutions to both national and international issues. The Democrats generally propose liberal or progressive solutions and the Republicans generally propose conservative ones.

The conservative philosophy and solutions of a Republican administration and Congress were rejected in November. The American people based much of their decisions in that election on the economic problems and current crisis experienced by the middle class over the last eight years.

Many of the progressive solutions proposed by the Democrats should be readily implemented this year—because President Obama now has the support of the Democratic majority in Congress and a large majority of the American people.
Activity
How does President Obama and progressive strategies differ from conservative strategies in addressing our current economic problems: foreclosure, financial crises, Obama energy plan, Obama tax cuts, and the 2008 recession?

Students should select one of these issues and write a report of at least 100 words or a presentation of at least two minutes that cites at least two sources and addresses the following essential questions for critical thinking:
  • How do liberal/progressive strategies proposed by President Obama attempt to solve the problem that you selected?
  • What is the conservative Republican strategy to solve the same problem?
  • Which solution do you prefer and why?
Pathfinder: Choose Keyword search option > Type the keywords listed above for the problem you selected > Click Sort by Date on the results page
