2008 Democratic & Republican Presidential Conventions
Millions of people around the world watched the 45th Democratic National Convention in Denver from August 25-28. This was followed by the Republican Party's 39th nominating convention in Minneapolis-Saint Paul from September 1-4.
In addition to selecting the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, each convention also adopted a platform that addresses the major issues that will be debated this fall until the election in November.
Each party platform conveys an overall action plan for Americans to consider when they vote for the party and candidate of their choice. The polls have identified a variety of major issues that are important to the American people this election year:
- How to end the war in Iraq and maintain stability in the Middle East.
- How to address the war in Afghanistan, Al Queda, and the resurgence of the Taliban.
- How to end the economic recession and create more jobs that pay well for Americans.
- How to provide affordable health care for all Americans.
- How to create an energy policy that benefits Americans, in the short and long term.
- How to solve the illegal immigration problem in a humane and effective way.
- How to improve K-12 education and provide students with 21st-century knowledge and skills.
