Opening of the U.N. General Assembly
The U.N. General Assembly opens its annual three-month session on September 16. The General Assembly is the U.N.'s principal forum for debate and the only U.N. body that includes representatives from all 192 U.N. member nations.
From September through December, the General Assembly meets to consider a number of issues, including international cooperation, human rights, environment, peace, and security. The leaders of different nations often address the General Assembly at the opening of the session.
Activity (Grades K-5)
Assign each student (or have each student select) a country in the CultureGrams Kids Edition series. They should prepare to act as their country's representative or leader in the U.N. General Assembly. Students should prepare a short (one minute) presentation highlighting the country. For example, each student could select five interesting facts about that country.
Additionally, using the Flag Gallery, print the flag outline for each student's country. Have the students color in the flag. Alternatively, have them create their nation's flag out of art materials, using the flag image in the Kids Edition as a model.
Hold the U.N. General Assembly by having the students present their assigned nation's flag (all of which should then be posted together in a prominent spot in the classroom) and give the short presentations as if they were that country's representative or leader.
