Discovering the Origins of the Universe
After 14 years of labor, scientists at the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) laboratory outside Geneva successfully
activated the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It is now the world's largest, most powerful particle collider and, at $8 billion, the most
expensive scientific experiment to date. It supersedes the former #1 in the World, the Tevatron at the Fermi National Accelerator
Laboratory near Chicago.
At 4:28 a.m. EDT on September 10, the CERN scientists announced that a beam of protons had completed its first circuit around the
collider's 17-mile-long racetrack, 300 feet underneath the Swiss-French border. They then sent the beam around several more times.
"It's a fantastic moment," said Lyn Evans, who has been the project director of the collider since its inception in 1994. "We can now
look forward to a new era of understanding about the origins and evolution of the universe."
Eventually, the collider is expected to accelerate protons to energies of seven trillion electron volts and then smash them together,
recreating conditions in the primordial fireball only a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. Scientists hope the machine will be a sort
of Hubble Space Telescope of inner space, allowing them to detect new subatomic particles and forces of nature.
BookCart Learning Activity
ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity for your students to use: "CERN, Particle Accelerators, and Quantum Physics
Research."
It includes three models of essential questions for critical thinking that you can assign to your students. You can easily create or
substitute others if you wish. Here are the instructions for copying this BookCart and almost 100 others for eLibrary Science:
- Logon to the eLibrary Science Teacher Edition to access BookCart Editor.
- Click the BookCart Admin link.
- Click the ProQuest Carts tab.
- Review the list of Folders on the left side and click eLibrary Science--BookCarts.
- Scroll down and find "CERN, Particle Accelerators, and Quantum Physics Research."
- Click the Copy icon in the Actions column to the right of this title.
- Return to My Local Carts.
This BookCart can easily be edited for most effective use:
- Click the new BookCart Title with the prefix "Copy of."
- Delete "Copy of" and then type your first and last name in the Author boxes.
- Type your email address in the box next to Author.
- Edit the sample of STUDENT DIRECTIONS in the Description box.
- Scroll down and click Save.
- Click My Local Carts tab to see your newly edited and ready to use activity.
Another Opportunity: Copying Science CourseCarts
If you missed the opportunity to copy the two new CourseCart collections for eLibrary Science, here's your chance to do it now. Here
are the links to the list of these CourseCarts:
Biology, Earth & Space Science.
You can copy these CourseCart collections and almost 100 other science models from ProQuest Carts collection. (Learn how.)
- Logon to the eLibrary Science Teacher Edition to access BookCart Editor.
- Click the BookCart Admin link below the Search box.
- Click the ProQuest Carts tab.
- Review the Folders on the left and click "Earth Science CourseCarts--eLibrary Science."
- Click the Copy Icon in the Actions column for the first title.
- Return to My Local Carts.
- Repeat this process for each of the CourseCarts
- Repeat the steps above to copy the CourseCarts for Biology
With editing, each CourseCart can include information that students can use to complete the assignment (example: write a report of at
least 150 words that cites at least three resources and addresses each of the essential questions listed).
To edit the BookCart for your students to use:
- Click the new BookCart Title with the prefix "Copy of."
- Delete "Copy of" and then type your first and last name in the Author boxes.
- Type any brief and specific directions for your students to use in the Description box.
- Scroll down and click Save.
