our SIRS solutions spotlight
women's history
from their unique perspectives.
SIRS Knowledge Source®
The list of women who have occupied significant roles in American history is varied and great: Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Margaret Sanger, Gloria Steinem and Katherine Graham are just a few such women.
Women of the 21st century continue this tradition of excellence and are widely recognized for their myriad social, cultural and artistic achievements. But historically, the subject of women's history was missing from classrooms and absent from the cultural dialogue. In an effort to increase awareness about women's societal contributions, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 1987 designating the month of March as Women's History Month.
SIRS Knowledge Source pays tribute to women's history with a wealth of articles and Web sites profiling the women's movement, women's suffrage and notable women and their accomplishments. Articles include:

The public celebration of women's history began in 1978 as Women's History Week. The week including March 8, International Women's Day, was selected and in 1981, a joint Congressional resolution declared it National Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women's History Month.
Women's contributions to American history are immeasurable. Despite the obstacles encountered in societies once hostile to equal rights, they have overcome hardships and adversities to make lasting contributions to art, literature, sports, science, politics, technology, leadership, and social reform. Whatever their achievements, women are widely recognized as playing a vital role in American society.
SIRS Discoverer pays tribute to Women's History Month by honoring the countless women, both past and present, who have helped make America what it is today. Learn more about their lives and achievements in such articles as:
