We want to recognize these leaders in information literacy that truly do create a new 21st Century culture of learning in their schools.

ProQuest is pleased to recognize a group of these forward-thinking librarians who use eLibrary and BookCarts to help them achieve the goal of all librarians -- partner with teachers to help them be more effective in raising student achievement in essential literacy skills and in knowledge of academic content.

BookCarts: Save Time, Better Currency
Success story testimonial: eLibrary BookCart inquiry-based learning activities "I was introduced to eLibrary BookCarts at the Washington Library Media Association's 2008 Fall Conference. [Short video introduction.]"

"When I saw what the presenter was doing with them, I became very interested in learning how to create BookCarts for my middle school research projects."

"After one full year of using eLibrary with many of my Science and Humanities classes, I am finding that my students have a better understanding of what a reliable resource truly is."

"They are going to my BookCarts instead of going to generic search engines on the Internet. Therefore, they are saving a considerable amount of valuable classroom and library time finding the information they need."

"With the use of eLibrary and my growing collection of BookCart learning activities, I can be confident that my students are using trustworthy sources in their investigations."

Virginia Success: BookCarts & English Coursework
Success story testimonial: eLibrary BookCart inquiry-based learning activities "I was introduced to eLibrary BookCarts at a Virginia Educational Media Association (VEMA) conference. I tried to understand how to create and use them then, but was not really able to master the concept until I completed a webinar arranged through eLibrary with one of their instructors (free, schedule). I believed that BookCarts could help students make better use of their time and would help students at all levels gain background and understanding of their topics and related issues very quickly."

"Our high school is on block schedule with an ever-demanding curriculum. Instructional time is very valuable and strategies that help students increase time on task are optimal. By using BookCarts to meet curriculum needs, students in academic and vocational classes gain access to a wealth of quality information quickly and easily."

"Also, by collaborating with teachers (how-to guide) and discussing gaps in resources I realized ProQuest Model BookCarts (listing, video how-to @ 5:55) or original BookCarts that we create, was one tool available to help fill the gap. I used BookCarts with English 10 students in correlation with their study of Night, by Elie Wiesel and was very pleased with how quickly students were able to find information. The English 10 teachers were also very pleased with the citation tool available."

Donna Swarr Exemplary BookCart Collection Recognition
"My exploration of BookCarts began while I was working as the Library Media Coach for the Hartford Public Schools. I was assessing the HPS online learning resource subscriptions and mapping these to the curriculum needs by grade level. Most of the teaching staff was not aware of HPS online offerings."

"Several sessions providing an overview of the online resources including educator tools, such as BookCarts, were offered in the winter and spring of 2007. As a result, I started to create BookCarts, attempting to address the core curriculum needs of as many teachers as possible."

"The advantage of BookCarts over other products is that you can integrate a variety of both eLibrary and external content and also create your own quizzes. In the fall of 2007, I transferred to Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School as the Library Media Specialist. This enables me to have a closer collaborative relationship with classroom teachers."

"My plan for this spring is to introduce BookCarts to the grade level teaching teams who currently collaborate on lesson planning and instruction. This is an ideal environment to roll out this tool that targets digital resources to the specific learning and reading needs of students. It also provides sharing these BookCarts with other teachers in the school and district to maximize the teachers' efforts."

Carolyn Hoye, an innovative librarian at Coyle & Cassidy High School in Taunton, MA, has created an exemplary BookCart Collection of more than 175 for her teachers and students to use in research activities:

Innovative Librarian Integrates BookCarts into Inquiry-Based Learning
"After being exposed to the capabilities of eLibrary BookCarts at a workshop for librarians in the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Library System, I was really excited. Having witnessed first-hand the amount of time students waste "surfing-the-web" looking for appropriate electronic sources, I could see how eLibrary BookCarts could help our students to use their time more efficiently."

"Since eLibrary BookCarts were introduced to students at Coyle and Cassidy High School in Taunton, Massachusetts almost two years ago, their use, which initially began with the History Department, is now also being utilized by members of the English, Science, Language, and Mathematics Departments."

"Both teachers and students find eLibrary BookCarts especially helpful because the BookCarts contain accurate, current, and authoritative resources that can be easily verified. While the students are finding access to the new citation tool helpful, teachers are excited at the wealth of curriculum-related information that is available for FREE."

"Best of all, it's easy to develop your own custom subject specific BookCarts. Or, it's even easier to "copy" from the 700+ ProQuest Carts model collection and then individualize them for the needs of our students."
You can view, select, copy, and adapt any of Carolyn's BookCarts for your Local Carts collection. Simply click here to learn how to copy BookCarts.
