Biology CourseCarts:
Expand, Enrich & Update Science Textbooks

Most science textbooks are six-years old before they are replaced. That's a long time to rely on science information and issues that generally change during that time period.

So how can science teachers overcome the limitations of traditional textbooks to provide current information, and also enrich the major topics that are presented in the course of study?

ProQuest's new eLibrary Science CourseCarts can help science teachers and students to stay current in both science content and related issues resolution.

They are editorially-created collections of model eLibrary Science BookCarts correlated directly to mainstream science courses of study and accompanying textbook. Now science teachers can assign research activities that directly support the way and the sequence of what they teach.

The first in this series of CourseCarts consists of 27 BookCarts that address the needs of Biology teachers and students. Each has more than 30 topic-relevant articles and websites with the most current information available. Each has the ability for students to add to these resources by doing limited and focused searches of teacher-selected eLibrary Science Publications from within the BookCart.

This means that these BookCart have the tool to keep them current whenever it's appropriate. Each has a template in which a teacher can include student directions, a quiz, and, most important, end-of-chapter critical thinking questions. Each of these CourseCarts is a teacher lesson plan for inquiry-based learning in Biology.

You may choose, copy, and then customize a student activity for Biology from this collection. Or you can select and copy another BookCart from a collection of almost 100 eLibrary Science models from ProQuest Carts collection. (More information.)

• Logon to the eLibrary Science Teacher Edition.
• Click the BookCart Admin link below the Search box.
• Click the ProQuest Carts tab.
• Look at the left margin and click the folder titles: "Biology CourseCarts--eLibrary Science."
• Notice that there's also a separate folder for all "eLibrary Science--BookCarts".
• Click the Copy Icon in the Actions column for the first title.
• Return to My Local Carts.
• Repeat this process for each of the CourseCarts.

To edit the CourseCarts for your students to use:

• Click the My Local Carts tab.
• Click the first CourseCart Title (each one will include the prefix "Copy of") to edit it.
• Delete "Copy of" and then type your first and last name in the Author boxes.
• Type any brief and specific directions for your students to use in the Description box.
• Scroll down and click Save.
• Return to My Local Carts.
• Repeat the process.
