How does your garden grow?
The National Gardening Association (NGA) sponsors National Garden Month in April each year. This is an opportunity for students to discover simple ways to bring their backyards, schools, and neighborhoods closer to the rhythm of nature. It's a time to discover the joy of growing plants that you can eat, plants that provide beauty, plants that are weird, and plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds as an added treat.
Activity
Assign your students research activities to learn more about different types of plants that they can grow in their backyards or plant in school gardens. Assign students a different fruit, flower, bush, or weird plant to research. Students should address the following essential questions in a report of about 100 words, using at least two sources:
- What is your plant; and in what environment is it generally found?
- Does this plant have any diseases or pests that threaten it?
- Can I grow this plant where I live--why or why not?
- What does this plant need from me in order to do its best?
