What does global warming have to do with hurricanes?
September is historically the most active month of the hurricane season, which spans June 1 to November 30. Scientists know that global warming can affect the temperature of the oceans and trigger more frequent and more devastating hurricanes. Global warming, hurricanes, and the study of weather phenomena are very high on the list of topics that students want to learn about.
Activity: eLibrary Science has a growing collection of resources that teachers can customize to the unique needs of their students, whether they're AP, IB, Honors, mainstream, or reading-challenged. ProQuest has developed a collection of model BookCarts that address many of the topics/issues that these students will study and research, particularly in AP and IB courses, where research activities focused on current science topics/issues are required. With so much to cover in AP and IB courses, students and teachers need to maximize the time spent reading, analyzing, and synthesizing information by minimizing the time spent searching and evaluating resources.
When eLibrary Science BookCarts are used for student research activities, teachers and students reap the following benefits:
- Student understanding increases when teachers provide appropriate reading level articles
- Student interest increases because teachers can select appropriate articles and websites
- Learning time is conserved because surfing and distractions are dramatically reduced
- Focused relevancy and authority of resources is ensured for each activity
- Lesson plan elements added to BookCarts ensure students know what to do with resources
An example of this is the new model BookCart "Hurricanes, Levees, and Flood Control" that integrates, science, engineering, and government for studying this timely topic for September.
To copy this and/or other eLibrary Science BookCarts:
- Learn how to copy our quality, model Carts
- Click the ProQuest Carts tab > eLibrary Science -- BookCarts folder
- Click the Copy Icon next to the title noted above
- This will copy the BookCart into your My Local Carts collection
- Each copied Cart will have "Copy of" preceding its name
- Edit each to include your name as author and delete "Copy of"
Even more important, this model contains all the information that students will need to complete the research assignment. Teachers can include the following information in the Description Box to support students in school or at home:
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS FOR CRITICAL THINKING
- How do levees provide protection against flooding?
- Why do levees fail and what solutions are there for improved protection?
- What are some possible solutions to protect New Orleans from another Katrina-like hurricane?
- What are some of the causes of the flooding in New Orleans from Katrina and what are some unique solutions being proposed?
