Promoting Domestic Violence Awareness
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October to raise public awareness about an issue that shatters the lives of men, women, and children. Domestic violence is an abuse of power. The abuser may use physical violence, emotional abuse, threats, and/or intimidation to control his or her victim.
Domestic violence can occur between spouses, current and former intimate partners, household members, family members, heterosexuals, and homosexuals. Victims and perpetrators of domestic violence span all genders, socioeconomic classes, ethnicities, races, cultures, and religions.
SIRS Leading Issues Activity: Violence is a cause or an effect of a variety of engaging issues that impact many school students. Exploring both sides of many of these issues provides a way that teachers can help students to cope with personal violence or help other students to cope.
Here is a list of Leading Issues that teachers and students can select from for their research activity: Alcoholism, Child Abuse, Drug Abuse, Hate Crimes, Family Violence, School Violence, and Violence in Mass Media.
Assign or let students select from one of these issues, choosing a pro or con position to defend. Students should follow the unique five-step process that integrates critical thinking into each Leading Issue.
ProQuest provides four unique report/presentation models specifically tailored to the format of each Leading Issue. This coordinated approach to the five-step process makes reporting and presentation easier and ensures organized critical thinking in each report.
Teachers should explore these models to see which are best suited to their students. These unique resources include two teacher management versions and four correlated student versions:
