National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, November 11-17.

During this week, a number of schools, communities, and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness.

The plight of those without a home can be both lonely and difficult. Addressing their struggles by organizing and participating in this week may bring greater solidarity and understanding, as well as promote future involvement.

Events, such as "One Night Without a Home," help people realize the difficulties that homeless persons face daily. It is imperative to dispel myths that label homelessness as someone else's problem, or claim that an end to homelessness is impossible.
Activity
SIRS Leading Issues focuses on the topic of Homelessness and lets students explore both sides of this enduring issue. Other related issues such as poverty and alcoholism may also be of interest.

Assign or let students select from one of these issues and a pro or con position to defend. Students should follow the unique five-step process provided within our Leading Issues content that integrates critical thinking into each Leading Issue.

ProQuest also provides four unique report/presentation models specifically tailored to the format of each Leading Issue. This coordinated approach to the five-step process make reporting and presentation easier and ensures organized critical thinking in each report. Teachers should explore these models to see which are most suited for their students.

These unique resources include two teacher management versions and four correlated student model versions:
