What is the hurricane season and what causes it?

Although June 1st is the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season in the U.S., August is the month that the frequency and intensity of hurricanes really accelerates and hits its peak in September, and then ends November 30.

Most hurricanes that hit the United States begin either in the Caribbean or the Atlantic. However, many of the most severe hurricanes start as seedlings coming off the coast of Africa. In order to form, a hurricane needs the warm water of the tropics which feeds the storm with energy. When hurricanes reach land or cooler waters their energy supply is reduced dramatically and they turn into lesser tropical storms before they dissipate entirely.
Activity: Our model BookCart collection provides teachers with an instant and professional resource on many curriculum topics including this month's theme of Hurricane Season.

Using ProQuest models ensures that mini-research activities for students save time for reading and writing and also ensure a variety of custom learning resources for their students. BookCarts can be lesson plans as well when teachers add directions, essential questions, and assessment criteria that guide students in resolving issues and solving problems.

Here is a sample of the science-themed BookCarts that are available for the study of hurricanes: El Nino and the Impact on Weather; Global Warming and Hurricanes; Hurricanes, Cyclones, and Typhoons; and Weather Tools and Forecasting.

Each of these BookCarts already contains essential questions that teachers can assign to students to guide them in how to select resources and present their thinking on the overall topic/issue. Teachers can add others that are more appropriate for their students.

This ensures that reports will be more than a summary of facts but include student opinion based on the best facts based on critical thinking. Each BookCart also has a place reserved for a teacher to include these lesson plan elements: student directions; additional print resources; and the type of assessment that will be used for the project.

Assign each student one or more essential questions to answer in a two-minute oral report. Presentation skills are part of all curriculum standards and are important for success in future education, careers, and life.

Presentations also provide an opportunity for students to learn more than they could simply by having teachers read and grade individual reports. If student questioning from the audience is encouraged, then this also help prevent plagiarism because students are tested on knowledge of their presentation.
