Why do hurricanes mostly affect the U.S. in August and September?

We are entering the most active time periods for the formation of hurricanes that impact the islands of the Caribbean, the states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, the states bordering the Atlantic Ocean, and the vacation plans of millions of Americans.

This is an opportune time for students to discover more about how hurricanes form, how they are measured, what the hazards are, and what precautions to take if you are threatened.
Activity: Students will get the best information for their mini-research activity by following this search path: Click the Topics tab, then Science >> Earth Science >> Weather >> Weather & Weather Phenomena >> Hurricanes.

Assign students a two-minute oral presentation on some aspect of hurricane knowledge:
  • How hurricanes form and why
  • How hurricanes are named
  • How hurricanes are measured
  • How meteorologists try to predict and track them
  • Historic hurricanes
  • Hurricane preparation and damage minimization
  • Other forms of hurricanes in other countries
Oral reports help students to share knowledge with each other, develop confidence in presenting their ideas, and develop essential language arts skills.
