SIRS Discoverer®

SIRS Discoverer The concept for the Boy Scouts originated in 1899, during the Boer War. British soldiers fought Dutch and French settlers over control of portions of South Africa. Because British troops were outnumbered, Colonel Robert Baden-Powell recruited boys for assistance, including delivering mail and military orders.

The young cadets helped protect the South African town of Mafeking for 217 days. Seven years later, in 1907, Baden-Powell created the Boy Scouts.

Some American Boy Scout troops participate in the Mafeking Challenge, a game with events based on the actual siege. What skills do Boy Scouts practice during the Mafeking Challenge?

The inventor of this concept then founded the supermarket chain called Piggly Wiggly, which is still in existence today.
