Upcoming World Holidays
Holidays provide a great way to introduce students to the culture and history of a country. "Observe" a world holiday in your classroom by asking students to research the holiday's origins or learn more about a particular aspect of the country.
Holiday Focus: Kadooment Day (Barbados)
Kadooment Day is the culmination of the Crop Over Festival, which spans June, July, and early August. Its origins go back to the 1780s when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar.
Participants celebrate another year of successful sugar cane harvest with bands (groups of people in brightly colored theme costumes) that parade and dance through the streets, followed by trucks blasting calypso and other music. Festivities include costume and music contests, street vendors, and craft displays. Kadooment Day is celebrated on the first Monday in August.
