  Intellectual Freedom Awards
SCASL/SCLA/SIRS Intellectual Freedom Award

For more than 25 years, SIRS has been dedicated to the concept of intellectual freedom and excellence in education. To further this concept, we established SIRS Intellectual Freedom awards.

2003
Pat Scales
Director, Library Services
South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities
Greenville, SC

"Everytime we listen to a child's opinion, we have practiced the principles of intellectual freedom."~ Pat Scales

2002
Carl Stone
Director
Anderson County Library System
Anderson, SC

"It was a pleasant surprise to be honored with the 2002 SIRS Intellectual Freedom Award for South Carolina at the SCLA/SELA Joint Conference. The Anderson County Library has defended unfiltered access for the Internet, access to information on all points of view, and the use of library services and facilities by all who enter. We have won some battles and lost some, but the goal of unfettered access for all remains at the core of what we do."~ Carl Stone

2001
Ida Thompson
Media Coordinator
Richland County School District #1
Columbia, SC

-and-

Betty Garrison
Media Specialist
Satchel Ford Elementary School
Columbia, SC

"It was an honor to accept the 2001 SCASL/SIRS Intellectual Freedom Award on March 17 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We are pleased that the process of our school and school district used in handling parent concerns regarding curriculum, specifically "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was so effective. A commitment to intellectual freedom was renewed at Satchel Ford Elementary and in our community. Thank you for the generous award and your leadership in promoting intellectual freedom."~ Betty Garrison
