For more than 25 years, SIRS has been dedicated to the concept of
intellectual freedom and excellence in education. To further this concept, we
established SIRS Intellectual Freedom awards.

"The trip to Boca Raton in February 2002 was an opportunity
I never expected to win. As I looked over the guidelines for the competition,
the biggest surprise was that the recipient’s institution need not subscribe
to SIRS services. This professional development opportunity is not a sales
pitch. It is a learning opportunity that you craft for yourself. On the
surface, the itinerary for my trip looked pretty tame: introductory sessions
all over the SIRS corporation, training sessions with Mandarin and visits to
several libraries in the area. What I came away with was the enjoyment of
meeting so many nice people, and visiting a part of my country I had never
before seen. There is no way to adequately describe the visit so I will close
this piece with a scattering of impressions from the trip.
Observing differences in queuing behavior between North
Americans and Russians.
Learning that SIRS owns a commercial printing shop, which
produces fine poster art.
Meeting so many of the interesting and highly qualified
people who work at SIRS.
Seeing that there really are people who read, select and
edit all those articles.
Going with a SIRS host to each library, and having each
person as excited as I about the visit.
Meeting librarians from many types of libraries, and being
able to share with them our world of international school librarianship."
